Milan, 12 October 2006 - Ninety-one percent of EU decision-makers and opinion formers are favourably disposed to the medical technology industry. This was the key finding of the first medical technology perception study conducted on behalf of Eucomed, the European Medical Technology Industry Association. The two main reasons why respondents feel favourable to this sector are its contribution to the improvement of life expectancy and the innovativeness of its products. The survey results were presented today in Milan on the occasion of the association's annual general meeting.
Only 7% of the people surveyed said they know "nothing" about the industry. Media and personal contact were most commonly first mentioned as sources of information on the industry. Most felt that issues relating to medical devices and technology are "as important as other issues" coming over their desks. Sixty-four percent felt that the medical devices and technology issues would become more important than they are today. The main issues facing the industry in Europe today and in the near future are considered to be: research and development; maintaining the industry's competitiveness; regulating new and emerging technologies; pressure on prices and funding & reimbursement of medical care.
A high percentage of people surveyed know medical technology plays an important role in many areas. The highest known are cardiovascular surgery and hearing aids.
Awareness of impending legislation is patchy. Thirty-two percent say they are unaware, in particular the media. More felt that the regulatory framework for medical devices should be separate from medicinal product regulation than combined.
This research was commissioned to identify levels of awareness of the medical technology sector, and of the issues currently challenging this sector in Europe. One hundred and fifty opinion formers were interviewed by telephone in the summer of 2006 (66 from the European Parliament, 39 from the EU Commission, 22 NGOs, 12 Member State Representatives and 11 International Media).
