Brussels, 27th June 2007 - The Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME) and the European Medical Technology Industry Association (Eucomed) have agreed on a "Joint Declaration on the Cooperation between the Medical Profession and the Medical Technology Industry".
Cooperation between doctors and the companies that research and provide medical technology is important and necessary at all stages of the development and use of medical technology. This cooperation ensures the safety of patients and efficacy of diagnosis and therapy.
CPME and Eucomed, aware of their responsibilities vis-à-vis patients and society, consider it essential to establish jointly accepted guidelines so that they can serve as a framework at both European and national level in the relationship between doctors and medical technology companies.
The medical profession and the medical technology industry have already each adopted ethical principles to govern the conduct of their activities. CPME and Eucomed have confirmed these existing principles in this joint statement.
The Declaration addresses meetings organised and sponsored by industry, sales and promotion, clinical trials, and consultancy.
